From Passion to Profession: The Journey of Coach Sean Wong

With over five years of experience in powerlifting coaching, Coach Sean Wong is dedicated to helping athletes achieve their full potential and excel in the sport. His journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning.

How It All Began

“It all started in 2017 when a friend invited me to watch him compete in a powerlifting event. At the time, I had no idea what powerlifting entailed. I went to support him and discovered that one could compete in the squat, bench press, and deadlift disciplines. That event ignited my fascination with the sport and marked the beginning of my journey into the world of powerlifting.”

The First Competition

“By 2019, I decided to compete in my first powerlifting meet alongside some coursemates. At the time, I was coached by a friend I met through the sport. Surprisingly, I found immense satisfaction in programming workouts and helping others refine their form. This newfound passion drove me to delve deeper into the principles of powerlifting programming and to explore ways to optimize it, all while pursuing my diploma and bachelor’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science.”

Stepping into Coaching

“As I progressed, people began asking if I offered coaching. Despite my lack of formal coaching experience at the time, I embraced the challenge. I took on my first three clients, applying the knowledge I gained from my studies and from observing experienced coaches. This marked the beginning of my journey as a powerlifting coach, deepening my understanding and passion for the sport.”

Achieving Milestones

“By 2022, post-pandemic, several of my athletes were preparing for qualifying meets. One of them achieved remarkable success, earning a spot on the national team and winning four gold medals, along with first place in his weight class at the SEA Cup Championship.”

A Personal Comeback

“In 2023, after a brief hiatus from competitive powerlifting, I decided to challenge myself once again. My goal was to earn a place representing my nation in the Asian Championships, which were held locally. The journey was far from easy—I had to relearn, push through adversities, and balance work with training. Despite the challenges, I held firm to my belief that Process = Progress. By trusting the process and giving my all, I made consistent strides forward.”

Coach Sean Wong’s story exemplifies how dedication and a love for powerlifting can evolve into a rewarding career. With a strong foundation in sport science and a proven track record, he continues to inspire and elevate athletes to new heights in their performance.
